THE WEEKLY EH?! // October 31st, 2023
The latest highlight of FIVE things happening in the Kimberley/Cranbrook area this week + FOUR other items of some locals' interests (also a FREE email newsletter).
Hi!
Welcome to the 31/10/23 edition of ‘THE WEEKLY EH?!’ newsletter!
Here’s Five Things
Since The 95EH Events Calendar gets updated with Kimberley AND Cranbrook area events on the regular (and it’s FREE for anybody to get their local events listed, just visit moun.town/events for the simple details), I do a weekly HIGHlight of FIVE things happening FOR the current week EVERY Tuesday… and somehow it’s Tuesday again, so:
THING #1: Even though today is officially Halloween, last week’s newsletter was really the ‘Halloween Newsletter’, as a big majority of the local Hallow-events happened over the weekend — BUT — that doesn’t mean that there isn’t some tricks and treats to still be had today (even if I end up not getting this newsletter sent out in time, like a real trickster… which is a good reminder to follow 95EH on Facebook for #dailyehs and on Instagram for daily EHs via 95EHdotCA’s InstaStories, as this newsletter is just a fraction of the functionality you could be receiving freely)!
For example, besides whatever your usual route is for Halloween candy collecting, it should be noted that Tamarack Mall in Cranbrook is doing their Trick Or Treat from 2:30pm to 4:30pm 🎃
And in Kimberley there’s the 10th annual Platzl Trick-or-Treat happening from 3pm - 5pm (check this handy map for all the participating businesses + check this shoutout post on FB for a glimpse of some goodies & goodness). And don’t forget that a part of that Platzl Trick-or-Treat is a self-guided Haunted Library experience at Kimberley Public Library 👻
THING #2: As Mother Nature has already tried to tell you, the local larches were popping once again this year — AND — once again, locals will be gathering to appreciate those larches at Kimberley Larch Festival (which is happening Friday, November 3rd, from 5pm-9pm at Grist & Mash this year). “Larchest is a ‘just for fun’ photography contest that is meant to inspire Kimberley folks to get outside and enjoy the larch trees as they change colour. Then, we come together one night, enjoy each others’ photos, and have a fun competition. Drop in briefly to vote, or stay all night, it doesn’t matter. Bring your kids or make it an adult night, doesn’t matter. It’s very casual, we just hang out, look at the photos, vote and mingle.”
THING #3: Abundance Holistic Health & Yoga Fair is happening on Saturday November 4th up at Kimberley Conference Centre — “Join us for an immersive day of wellness, self-care and partake in a variety of classes & workshops. And check out our amazing exhibitors. The Wellness Market is free admission to the general public and takes place from 11am-5pm. Classes are from 9am-6pm and require a pass to attend which can be purchased online at abundancefair.ca”
THING #4: The opening of Cranbrook Art’s new Gallery Shop + their SQUARED exhibition is happening this Saturday from 1pm-4pm — “Artists will be in attendance, and there will be live music and food and beverages. All are welcome to attend this FREE event!”
THING #5: The 7th annual Kimberley Horror Fest is happening this Saturday at Centre 64! Unfortunately, if you didn’t snag your tickets quickly on the day they went up for sale, you’re now left with the horror-able news that this popular film fest party has sold out again (well, horror-able news for you, good news for the local film fest). Fortunately, you can always check out past Horror Fest content on their website (you’ll just have to wait a bit for this year’s crop to show up) + you can also live vicariously through Horror Fest updates on Instagram + Facebook all week/weekend 💀
Of course, there's always more than Five Things happening in any given week, so don't forget you can punch “moun.town/events” into any browser window at any time and be magically taken away to THE 95EH EVENTS CALENDAR… where you can see all the other Kimberley/Cranbrook events happening this week and beyond 👍
+ Four Ehs
And because there’s always more going on than just the local area events that get added to The 95EH Events Calendar, here’s 4 other things that are proving to be top of mind for at least one local area person:
EH #1: Not only is today the last day to get your trick and/or treating on (in the culturally accepted way at least), but today being the last day in October means that the clock is also ticking on how much longer you can still score special discounts at participating local stores for showing your KPL library card during Canadian Library Month — BUT DON’T WORRY — because there is no expiration date when it comes to making use of your KPL library card in a whole bunch of other useful ways, and I tackled 5 of those ways over in this blog post:
EH #2: Because I am hoping to get this newsletter out the door before the day is completely done (as some items in this newsletter have to do with today, because today is October 31st, which is also Halloween), I’m going to try and share some thoughts on the Israel/Palestine situation in a way that doesn’t require me to spend a lot of time humming & hawing about what exactly I want to say and how exactly to say it.
Also, the personal opinion I shared in the EH section of the October 10th WEEKLY EH?! still holds true for me, there’s just been more time to be disheartened with the ways in which this situation gets talked about in the media by people in power… and in the ways that these situations often don’t get talked about in the one form of media (ie. our social medias) where we all have the power to help take part in vetting the context/content that helps spread and shape the collective narrative.
So, for today, I will just share a tweet that resonated with ME recently — as Pakistan’s ambassador to the UN calmly criticizing Canada for wanting to add an amendment to the ceasefire that solely condemns Hamas is a very clear-eyed look at the hypocrisy of how other colonial/imperial states have been trying to present this Israel/Palestine situation:
PS - the tweet referenced above only contains a clip of the talk, but you can also watch the full 8-minutes on Youtube below (and it’s worth a listen):
Because there’s a way to look at what’s been going on in Israel/Palestine (and how that information is being presented) that should ring some familiar feeling internal alarm bells for anyone living in a country that recently started a National Day for Truth & Reconciliation to finally start acknowledging some of its own colonial/imperial inhumanity from the not-too-distant past (let alone its present actions/inactions on that issue).
EH #3: In related/unrelated news, I recently watched the Long Time Running documentary about The Tragically Hip’s final tour (a tour which actually coincided with our first summer in Kimberley & I remember the ski hill viewing of that final concert fondly), and the doc was a touching reminder of the good kind of ‘proud countrymen’ feeling that can exist in a nation of people who live around each other and share experiences (ie. not Nationalism, but just shared cultural moments that celebrate the human spirit… and what a beautiful human spirit Gord was to celebrate).
Anyways, it’s on Crave if you’re a Canadian and would crave some grace too:
EH #4: Speaking of The Hip, this seems like as good of a place as any to remind folks that I once went through EVERY studio album from The Tragically Hip so that I could put together a subjectively objective ranking + put together a 95-track ‘tragically hits’ mix cd playlist… and you can check all of that out over on the blahg or just press play on the mix cd playlist below (and let me know if there’s any Hip songs that you think is crazy for me to not have included in a playlist of 95, eh):
Of course, there’s always more ‘eh?!’ to share than the 4 EHs that came to my mind while putting together this week’s newsletter, so please make sure to follow 95EH on the Facebook & Instagram (especially if you ever frequent the highway 95/a area, as I share many things of some locals’ interests on the daily).
And for more Jeremy/HI54-specific stuff, you can also follow @HI54LOFI on the Instagram & Twitter & Facebook.
Because, hey… there’s a lot of stuff going on out there, eh?!
Until next week…
Please feel free to reach out to ‘hey@95eh.ca’ if you have any questions, comments, ideas and/or schemes — AND — if you think you know anybody else that might enjoy receiving this weekly newsletter about “some locals’ interests” in the highway 95/a/eh area, please feel warmly encouraged to send them a link so they can have a think about signing up too!
And don’t forget that EVERY Monday, I update YOUR WEEKLY 9(to)5 SHUFFLE with a new human-curated digital mix cd placed on top of this ongoing ‘95 tracks from 95 different artists’ playlist:
And you can find even more ‘diy radio’ stuff like that over on: MOUN.TOWN/FM
+ there’s also MOUN.TOWN/RADIO
+ there’s FM/TV
+ also ETC
