THE WEEKLY EH?! // October 3rd, 2023
This week's highlight of FIVE things happening in the Kimberley/Cranbrook area + FOUR other items of some locals' interests.
Hi!
Welcome to the 3/10/23 edition of ‘THE WEEKLY EH?!’ newsletter!
Here’s Five Things
Since The 95EH Events Calendar gets updated with Kimberley AND Cranbrook area events on the regular (and it’s FREE for anybody to get their local events listed, just visit moun.town/events for the simple details), I like to do a weekly HIGHlight of FIVE things happening FOR the current week every Tuesday — because you’d be surprised how easy it is to become one of those people who didn’t know about the thing until after the thing has already happened… and on that note:
THING #1: The Community Drumming Tour comes thru Kimberley on Tuesday evening at Centre 64 (7pm - 9pm) and the beat continues in Cranbrook on Wednesday evening at Cranbrook Community Theatre (7pm - 9pm). “Set free your inner rhythm, connect with your community, and let the beat move you!” — and visit Rhythm By Nature’s website to find out more about these ‘bang on the drum all day’ opportunities!
THING #2: “Calling all Tech workers and those with an interest in tech, KAST will be hosting a YXC Tech meet-up at Ground Floor Coworking Space on October 5th from 6pm-8pm. The event will feature a fascinating talk from College of the Rockies' Dr. Nicholas Kinar - who is making groundbreaking moves in environmental monitoring electronics, including avalanche detectors. Pizza and beverages will be provided! Tours of the YXC Makerspace will also be available.” — so if that sounds like your kind of Thursday evening, make sure you jump over to their sign-up sheet and add your name, as space is limited!
THING #3: As you’re probably already aware, (Canadian) Thanksgiving is this weekend — BUT — what you might be less aware of is: The Choice Shop’s THANKSGIVINGBACK event also makes its return this week (from Friday, October 6th to Monday, October 9th) 🦃 “This is the 6th year we've done this event, and it's definitely our favourite. Over the past 6 years, we've donated over $80,000 worth of clothing & footwear to students in our community. We look forward to another great fundraising weekend for kids in need.” — more event deets HERE!
THING #4: Despite what these increasingly colder/longer nights keep trying to suggest, ‘Market Season’ isn’t over just yet! Because not only is the Cranbrook Farmers Market still going strong every Saturday for a few more Saturdays (with a special Harvest Market this Saturday at Rotary Park from 10am - 1pm)…
BUT, there is also a Cranbrook Witches Market happening at the Days Inn Ballroom on Friday, October 6th (6pm to 10pm, ticketed event) + Saturday, October 7th (11am to 8pm, open to public / free admission) — “The 2nd Annual Cranbrook Witches Market; A Magical & Mystical Marketplace of over 40 Artists, Craftspeople, Healers & Psychics & Magickal Folk showcasing their wares & talents in the spirit of Samhain & Halloween” 🖤
THING #5: And don’t let these colder/longer nights make you think that people are going to stop ‘FEST-ing’ around here either, because Grist & Mash kick off the October Fest-ing with their second annual Oktoberfest — AND THEN — the theme for this Saturday’s First Saturdays is… also Oktoberfest (and you should check out this Facebook post with all the different individual event posters, as there really is a wide range of stuff going on around the Platzl this Saturday, as you can see in the overall event poster below):
And then as the larches turn more & more yellow, and as the halloween paraphernalia becomes more & more omnipresent, consider those visual reminders from the universe that even more local area FEST-ing is still to come this year with Kimberley Larch Festival and Kimberley Horror Fest!
Of course, there's always more than Five Things happening in any given week, including this week, so don't forget you can always punch -> moun.town/events <- into any browser window at any time and be magically taken away to THE 95EH EVENTS CALENDAR… where you can see all the other events happening this week and beyond (and please remember that you can always reach out via email to 'hey@95eh.ca' if you have something of local area interest/intrigue that you think would be a good fit for a HWY 95EH signal boost) 👍
+ Four Ehs
And because there’s always more going on than just the local area events that get added to The 95EH Events Calendar, here’s 4 other things that are proving to be top of mind for at least one local area person:
EH #1: Thanks to some inside sources I have at Kimberley Public Library, not only am I now aware that October is Canadian Library Month (a national initiative started to help raise awareness about how useful/important a role libraries play in all of our communities), but I also happen to have some pretty sweet ‘library insider’ information to share with you about how, for the entire month of October, you can enjoy exclusive discounts at local businesses when you show your KPL library card!
“It’s our way of saying thank you for being a loyal library user and a valued member of our community” — so check the library’s blog for more details + here’s a screenshot of the local businesses currently participating in this local initiative to encourage residents to ‘get carded’ with their local library card around the community:
Of course, you need to have a KPL library card on your person in order to participate, SO, before you have to hear someone say, “What do you mean you don’t already have a library card? Don’t you like having free access to all kinds of great things?!”—which is a fair thing to say to someone who doesn’t have a library card for their local—save yourself from the friendly reminders and just pop on down to the Kimberley Public Library and get yourself a library card for FREE!
And then follow the Kimberley Public Library on Facebook and Instagram for the sharing of more (and more) reasons why having a local library card is a combination of being one of the smartest AND coolest things you can get for yourself, whether it’s Canadian Library Month or Any Other Month (especially since more of us making use of what our local library currently offers, even by just popping down to get a library card, it all helps make it more likely that our local library can continue to offer our local area access to smart AND cool things… because our active engagement with their services helps show how many of us recognize & value the library’s role in our community, which can often be reflected in the funding our libraries receive) 👍
EH #2: And while we’re on the topic of the many smart AND cool things that having a local library card opens up for you (a topic I may be further diving into for some future ‘mutually beneficial employment’ duties, #spoileralert), I just wanted to give a shout-out to being able to use the BC Interlibrary Connect option when searching for items, as it has become one of my go-to places to check first for certain ‘hard to come by in a small town’ books and/or even DVDs (and I have a feeling its usefulness is not on as many people’s radar as it should be, as I only recently realized it myself).
For example, a fellow gardener up at the KEGG.CA community garden had highly recommended I track down and watch the highly-esteemed-by-those-who-watched-it-in-the-90s tv show ‘Northern Exposure’ (partly because there’s a character on the show that I remind them of, but also because the show is literally about the relatable eccentric life that comes along with living in a small mountain town like we do) — the catch to this recommendation was that this was one of those shows from the past that never made it over to streaming because, like with The Wonder Years, the original tv broadcast was famous for having great music selections, which means those great music selections are now infamously too expensive for streaming.
Sure, there’s always the “dodgy” ways of trying to find movies/shows online when they don’t exist on any of your country’s available corporate streamers, BUT, who wants to mess around with dodgy sites filled with unscrupulous pop-up ads when you can just pop “northern exposure” into the library catalogue search (making sure your ‘Library’ is set to ‘BC Interlibrary Connect’, of course)…
And then, after a wait time determined by how many copies are available at libraries throughout British Columbia, one day down the road you get an email notifying you that your hold on the DVD of the first season of Northern Exposure is available for pick-up at your small local mountain town library (which sounds like the kind of thing that could be ripped straight out of an episode of Northern Exposure):
EH #3: And since I casually mentioned ‘mutually beneficial employment’ in the previous EH, I figured I should appease fans of smooth segues and mention that I recently announced plans for introducing a quarterly tier to the ‘Mutually Beneficial Employment’ idea that I first started pitching with only a monthly option the other month. As ‘MBE’ is an evolving IRL experiment, with some ongoing conversation on that topic happening later this week over coffees, I’ll just say that you can read the updated current explanation of ‘MBE’ over on the blahg if interested:
AND… here is how I am explaining the general gist of this ‘MBE’ update over email (which is also a reminder to myself that I need to send out some more emails after I press ‘send’ on this email newsletter):
MONTHLY ‘MBE’ OPTION = $95/month, which comes with being an acknowledged supporter of some of the interconnected work that goes into running The 95EH Events Calendar + 2 HOURS of me working directly with the business/organization on work we agree to each month
QUARTERLY ‘MBE’ OPTION = $95/quarter, which comes with being an acknowledged supporter of some of the interconnected work that goes into running The 95EH Events Calendar + 2 HOURS of me working directly with the business/organization on work we agree to throughout a 3-month period
Extra Context: After 2 months of experimenting with 'Mutually Beneficial Employment' on a monthly basis (with 5 local businesses/organizations) I've found the $95/month tier makes for a good working relationship when it's the right budget/vision fit (ie. when the business/organization can see a longer vision of how having my skill set on hand for a couple hours every month fits into their current/future plans & budget) — BUT — I also can see how offering a $95/quarter tier might be a better fit for some businesses/organizations, especially smaller ones (because of budget reasons, but also because trying to envision how my 2 HOURS should/could be spent is easier to make space for when thinking of it on a quarterly basis instead of every month).
EH #4: In personal ‘Uh Oh News’… our car started making the kinds of sounds that make you go “uh oh” about 30 seconds before we got home from a Cranbrook trip this weekend (and then when I entered my description of those sounds into Google I got search results that made me go “uh oh” even further). Unfortunately, next Tuesday is the earliest I’m able to get into my local mechanic (who is also a city councillor… Northern Exposure much, eh), so I can’t officially confirm just how BIG (or small 🤞) of an “uh oh” this will end up being quite yet — I guess all I can do for now is ask the universe to put out some good vibes for our ailing Astra of Saturn (and with that manifestation in mind, I will include the only picture I can find on my computer of our little Astra in case anyone wants to include him in their prayers this month) 🙏
Of course, there’s always more ‘eh?!’ to share than the 4 EHs that came to my mind while putting together this week’s newsletter, so please make sure to follow 95EH on the Facebook & Instagram & Tumblr (especially if you ever frequent the highway 95/a/eh area IRL where these URL signals are getting relayed from). And for more Jeremy/HI54-specific stuff, you can also follow @HI54LOFI on the Instagram & Twitter & Facebook.
Because, hey… there’s a lot of stuff going on out there, eh?!
Until next week…
Please feel free to reach out to ‘hey@95eh.ca’ if you have any questions, comments, ideas and/or schemes — and if you think you know anybody else that might enjoy receiving this weekly newsletter about “some locals’ interests” in the highway 95/a/eh area, please feel warmly encouraged to send them a link so they can have a think about signing up too!
