THE WEEKLY EH?! // August 8th, 2023
This week's highlight of FIVE things happening in the Kimberley/Cranbrook area + FOUR other items of some locals' interests.
Hi!
Welcome to the 2nd edition of THE WEEKLY EH?! newsletter!
Everybody here at HI54/95EH Headquarters, which is currently located in a cool basement I’m house-sitting at with a cute one-eyed cat, hopes you had a nice long weekend — BUT — now that the official Work Week™ is back upon us (it is Tuesday, after all), I think it’s best we skip the small talk and just jump right into our weekly bizness 👇
Here’s Five Things
Since I'm always updating The 95EH Events Calendar with Kimberley AND Cranbrook events (and it’s FREE for anybody to get their local area events listed in the calendar, all anyone has to do is create a public Facebook event OR hit the ‘Submit Event’ button over on moun.town/events), I find it’s nice to do a weekly HIGHlight of FIVE things FOR the current week every Tuesday (long weekend or not) — because there’s always a lot of stuff going on around our neck of the woods (even if just counting the nature stuff), which makes it really easy to overlook a lot of the human-powered stuff that is also happening each week — hence this weekly recurrence:
• THING #1: It’s ROCK THE KOOTENAYS this week (which is a new three-day #classicrock music festival in Cranbrook at Western Financial Place, August 11th to 13th). Check out their website for ticket information and line-up details — but I will just share that, as I was checking out the line-up for myself, I soon found myself thinking that a much funner way to “check out” the line-up would be to put together a Spotify playlist featuring a couple tracks from each of the 11 artists/bands coming to Cranbrook this week, AND NOW… you can also listen to that mix cd playlist for yourself OVER HERE (its got some real 80s vibes if you’re into doing some musical time travel and/or audio cosplay).
• THING #2: Since it was a nice procrastination project to put together that ‘Rock The Kootenays’ playlist back in THING #1, I figured I might as well carry on with this ‘music festival music sampler’ bit — BECAUSE — about a 90 minute drive away from 95EH.CA’s highway 95a “office”, there’s a summer music festival happening for the 11th year in Fernie called Wapiti Music Festival. Possibly unfortunately for you (unless you already have tickets)… the festival is sold out :( BUT, possibly fortunately for you… I also put together a mix cd playlist on Spotify that features 2 tracks from each of the performing artists (one of which is Kimberley BC’s Heather Gemmel). So, if you don’t have tickets, now you can throw this playlist on shuffle and just pretend for a little bit that you’re going to Wapiti and not actually just doing the dishes with headphones on. HERE’S THE SPOTIFY LINK FOR THAT.
• THING #3: Friends of the Cranbrook Public Library are having a big ‘Books & More’ sale in the Manual Training School Meeting Room at Cranbrook Public Library this Friday, August the 11th (3pm-5pm, Friends’ members only) AND this Saturday, August the 12th (10am-3pm, general public). “Stock up on great reads for the summer — many different genres and types of materials will be available to suit every mood and taste! Need to free up some shelf space at home? Bring your donations to the front desk of the Library anytime!” - see their Facebook event for more info!
THING #4: Let’s keep riding the reading rainbow and mention there’s a ‘Pop Up Saturday Kids Club’ at the Kimberley Public Library happening on the morning of August 12th (and again on August 19th) — which is a Summer Saturday Kids Club with varied activities, crafts, stories & games to enjoy for ages 5 & up (and it’s free of charge + drop-in welcome if you happen to be around the Platzl on Saturday at 10:30am and suddenly realize you have children that you’d like help with entertaining/engaging for an hour). Because libraries are great for more than just book borrowing!
THING #5: You might have wondered to yourself, “If ‘THE WEEKLY EH?!’ gets sent out EVERY Tuesday to highlight what’s happening around Kimberley/Cranbrook each week, what about all the events that happen on Mondays? Will they just never get mentioned?” — WELL — I have also wondered that. And since The 95EH Events Calendar shows that two local businesses (Missy Hay Collective and Mountain Grass Gallery + Bistro) are collaborating on an ‘Outdoor Afternoon Transfer Crafting’ event on the Monday BEFORE I send out the next THE WEEKLY EH?! (aka: this event is happening Monday, August 14th), I guess we can now discover together that the answer to those earlier wonderings is: if/when I mention events that are happening on Mondays, I will just mention them the Tuesday before! Of course, I could think about changing which day I send THE WEEKLY EH?! out on (for example, it might seem more logical to do it on a Monday morning) — BUT — I also like that Mondays (especially Monday mornings) are kinda considered optional when living in a mountain town (especially if it’s snowed the night before #amirite). And I don’t want to disturb that kind of energy by giving myself a self-assigned Monday morning deadline to meet every week, so… ‘Eh Weekly Newsletter EVERY Tuesday’ it will remain, eh?!
Of course, there's always more than Five Things happening in any given week, so don't forget you can always punch -> moun.town/events <- into any browser window at any time and be magically taken to THE 95EH EVENTS CALENDAR to see all the other events happening this week and beyond + you can also follow 95EH on the Facebook for the sharing of even more things happening locally + over on Instagram there be a bunch of Ehs getting shared on the regular in the Insta Stories of @95EHdotCA + I’m hoping to eventually get to a ‘2 ehs a day’ posting schedule going over on the 95EH.CA Tumblr (and you can always reach out via email to 'hey@95eh.ca' if you have something of local area interest/intrigue that you think would be a good fit for a HWY 95EH signal boost & we can chat about the ways in which I might be able to help with that) 👍
+ Four EHs
And because sometimes there’s more going on than just the local area events that get added to The 95EH Events Calendar, here’s 4 other things that are proving to be top of mind for at least one local area person (ie. myself):
EH #1: I’d like to give a special shout-out to the 3 local establishments that have already signed-on for trying out an arrangement of ‘supporting the work that goes into The 95EH Events Calendar’ + ‘working directly with me (ie. Jeremy)’ that I am calling “Mutually Beneficial Employment” —SO — s/o Kimberley Public Library, Mountain Grass Glass + Bistro, and the Hourglass 🙌 🙌 🙌!!! I’m going to be working on how this ‘blahg monetization’ idea is better communicated throughout the rest of August (figuring some things out as we go) and, hopefully, I will be able to find some other suitable businesses/organizations to work with in similar ‘mutually beneficial employment’ ways. So… if anyone is interested in learning more about whether ‘mutually beneficial employment’ might be right for someone in your life (maybe even yourself?), for now… you can read more about ‘MBE’ underneath the events calendar over on moun.town/events (or you can also just send a “hey!” to ‘hey@95eh.ca’ if you have any questions).
EH #2: On the topic of finances, this newsletter is FREE to subscribe to for anyone who finds it worth being subscribed to (and I greatly appreciate anyone who takes the time to read & share in this age of way too much content to ever consume), BUT, as some people that I community garden with have discovered, there are options available if anyone was so inclined as to want to put any money towards the work that goes into doing this newsletter (plus all the other interconnected work that goes into everything 95EH.CA + HI54.BLOG). I’m new to using Substack, but their business model is basically to provide a writing platform to do a newsletter like this for no upfront cost to the writer, and then they take 10% off any subscription sales (and there’s some processing fees as well, as there always is). I turned on a $5.40/month option and a $95/year option in case anyone might be interested in supporting my work that way — AND — someone wonderful already went ahead with the $95/year option! And since two others asked if they could send me the money “another way” (ie. without entering card details on an online site they’re not familiar with, which I totally get), I’d just like to say that I am very open to money being sent to me in whatever ways work best for the person wanting to send me money for what I do :) And on a related note: you can CLICK HERE to see some other online options that exist for sending financial contributions to support the work I attempt to do (and there is the ‘mutually beneficial employment’ thing I mentioned earlier)… but genuinely -> NO PRESSURE <- I only mention it here because my accountant says it’d probably be a good idea if I communicated the getting-paid-part of “my job” more often (just kidding… I can’t afford an accountant) 🙃
EH #3: Someone else at the KEGG.CA garden last Saturday was asking me where the music from my pocket was coming from, so I explained that it was a public Spotify playlist of mine (which I do because I run a “music blog”), and then they said that they use the free-version of Spotify & they liked what they were hearing from my pocket, so then I said that I would shoot them an email with some links, AND THEN… I did that. True story. I’ll just add that if you’d also like to get in on some of those links: you should check out MOUN.TOWN/FM (where I use Spotify to program my own diy radio station, while also including available-on-Bandcamp archives for each streaming playlist on the blahg, because the current streaming model is another example of artists/workers getting the short-end of the stick for their art/work). MOUN.TOWN/FM features a whole bunch of ongoing human-curated ‘95 tracks from 95 different artists’ mix cd playlists that anyone can listen to anywhere they are, like the ‘YOUR WEEKLY 9(to)5 SHUFFLE’ that I update EVERY Monday (which, come to think of it, is another reason why I send THE WEEKLY EH?! out on Tuesdays). Tune-in whenever (or whatever)… and check out MOUN.TOWN/RADIO if you don’t use Spotify!
EH #4: While trying to think about what my ‘4th Eh’ would be for this week’s newsletter, I noticed on the 95EH Facebook page that there is a nice sounding event (that does not appear in The 95EH Events Calendar) happening by Sunflower Hill / Kimberley Riverside Campground on August 12th & 13th (10am - 4pm) called ‘River Bend Lane Art Walk’ (“Food, music, and art — featuring several artists of the Kimberley Friends Art Collective!”). So I figured I would not only mention that this nice sounding event is happening this weekend (in case anyone else’s local plans for this week would be improved by having it on their itinerary) — BUT ALSO — please take this as a reminder that it’s FREE to get local events added to The 95EH Events Calendar by simply making a public Facebook event OR there is a ‘Submit Event’ button right on The 95EH Events Calendar. So please tell your local friends that put on local events! Because I’m not always going to have a ‘4th Eh’ available to help signal boost all the events I can’t include in the ‘Here’s Five Things’ section (because 5 is a finite number), BUT… The 95eh Events Calendar over at moun.town/events is always available to help signal boost events not included in the Here’s Five Things section (but it can only do that for the events that are in the calendar already… and I can only get events into the calendar if they are submitted in one of the 2 ways my process can use). Because, together, I think we can make a really good & useful community calendar ✊
Of course, there’s always more ‘eh?!’ to share than the 4 Ehs that came to my mind while putting together this week’s newsletter, so please make sure to follow 95EH on the Facebook & Instagram & Tumblr, especially if you frequent the highway 95/a/eh area where these signals are getting relayed from.
And for more Jeremy/HI54-specific stuff, you can also follow @HI54LOFI on the Instagram & Twitter & Facebook (and since I’m just one person, be warned that there’s currently a lot of cross-over and self-collaboration between all my HI54+95EH social media accounts as I attempt to manage them all while also trying to think of ways to use social media less and/or more efficiently/intently).
Because, hey… there’s a lot of interconnected stuff going on out there, eh?!
Until next week…
Please feel free to reach out to ‘hey@95eh.ca’ if you have any questions, comments, ideas and/or schemes — and if you think you know anybody else that might enjoy receiving this weekly newsletter about some locals’ interests in the highway 95/a/eh area, please feel warmly encouraged to send them a link so they can have a think about signing up too!
